Solaris 10 的 X Window System

Sun Solaris 一直是許多先進技術的醞釀溫床，前天閱讀 Sun X Window System Group 的前輩 Alan Coopersmith 在其 blog 寫到 [X Changes in Solaris 10]，為我們揭開 Solairs 10 中 X Window System 的奧秘。

Solaris 10 X Window System 一項很重要的改變是，成功整合 Xorg X11R6.8，而我們也可以從此篇 blog 看出過去的歷史：

"Solaris versions before now shipped with the Xsun server (and long long ago, with Xnews, a hybrid X11/NeWS server). Xsun and Xorg both sprung from the same base code from the X Consortium long ago, but evolved in different ways. We had been working on porting new extensions and x86 device drivers from XFree86 to Xsun for several years, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to do so."

附帶說明一下，這個 NeWS 是過去 Sun 與其他 UNIX 大廠在制訂 Graphics Standard 時，所提出的規格，平心而論，NeWS 的技術水準比當時的 MIT X Window System 來得高，但是卻封閉保守許多。

這個過程中，Sun 貢獻 XEvIE，並重新檢閱 Damge 與 XFixes 這兩個新 X Extensions。有意思的是支援 Solaris 10 Service Management Facility (SMF) 與Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)，後者的介紹可以參考這篇 blog [Desktop Configuration Rights Profile]。
