No man is an island

John Donne 的作品〈Meditation XVII〉[1] 有句相當經典的名句：
    "No man is an island."
這裡的 "man" 有時也寫作 "one"，下午看了一篇賞析[2]，John Donne 著名的冥想過程，我們可以引述其精髓之處：
    "All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all: but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
我試著作中文翻譯：
    「每個人都是生命詩章的作者，都有自己的份量；當人死去，原本的詩章並不會被移出，相反地，是轉譯成更好的表達語言；而且每個章節都會歷經這樣的轉化歷程... 是此，如此的訓示並非只來自傳教士的叮嚀，也令人歡欣：然而，對我這樣如此迫近病魔的人來說，能有多少時日... 沒有人是一座孤島，作為自己生命的全部... 任何人的死去讓我更萎靡，因為我涉入人類的生活，也因此，別問哀鐘為誰而鳴，鐘聲為你而鳴。」
很生硬的想闡述作者的意思，不過顯然僅能斷章取義。John Donne 是十六世紀的神學家兼詩人，這一段顯示出人的死亡與超自然力量的神秘感情，從中產生感悟與思考新 面向。該詩被海明威的《戰地鐘聲》所引用，作為一個讀者，也早已融入情境，面對種種戰局的未知數，深怕生命的哀鐘孤鳴之際。

李敖大師則翻譯了部份段落，也就是我上述忽略之處，引述如下：
    沒有人是孤島
    譯者：李敖

    沒有人能自全，
    沒有人是孤島，
    每人都是大陸的一片，
    要為本土應卯。

    那便是一塊土地，
    那便是一方海角，
    那便是一座莊園，
    不論是你的、還是朋友的，
    一旦海水沖走，
    歐洲就要變小。

    任何人的死亡，
    都是我的減少，
    作為人類的一員，
    我與生靈共老。

    喪鐘在為誰敲，
    我本茫然不曉，
    不為幽明永隔，
    它正為你哀悼。
這部份的原文是：
    "No man is an island, entire of itself,
    every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main,
    if a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
    any man's death diminisheds me, because I am involved in mankind,
    and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls,
    it tolls for thee."
當然大師的翻譯絕對比我好許多，而只是因為紀錄到一半，才想起李敖大師曾在獄中作此創作，但我已經粗略的翻譯過，推敲字義的紀錄對我還是有所價值的。

[商業周刊] 2005.6.27 出刊的第 918 期的 p.88 起，五頁的篇幅做了「走出孤島」的系列報導，孤島化的台灣社會，人與人彼此疏離，套句晚晴婦女協會總幹事許文青的說法：
    「在虛擬的網路，當你說出不幸的遭遇，好多人會同情你，轉寄一大堆文章給你，但這些都無濟於事，這時，真正需要的，是一雙拉你出去的手 ，陪你到外面走走，好好吃頓飯，那才是改變的開始。」
從內湖的小山踏青結束後，我就一直思考許幹事的這席話，再三的訴說：
    "No man is an island."
這是我當下處境最好的寫照，而我要如何走出象牙塔？與其等哀鐘，是不是有更積極的作為？
